On Henry Fraser’s new album Buzzed, out October 12 on Anticausal Systems, the bassist breaks out from his influences and creates a singular solo work. He will be celebrating the release with a performance at Project Q on October 25 at 8pm.

Fraser is known for his work improvising with a number of experimental groups including the Brandon Seabrook Trio, CP Unit and his own band The Full Salon. On his new album Buzzed, he uses his experience improvising with others to dissect his bass playing and create communicative works within it. While born of a tradition that includes soloists like Barre Phillips, Joelle Leandre, Barry Guy, and Peter Kowald, Fraser has pushed through to a place where his playing becomes its own catalyst, building a strong and personal language.

Fraser explains, “I think a lot about the dichotomy between iconoclastic force and collective effort in making great music.” That balance of virtuosity and musicality push through on the opening track “his time, precisely this now” where frenzied bowing gives way to a kaleidoscopic wave of harmonies. Elsewhere on the album, Fraser contorts his instrument and impresses the physicality of the bass strings upon the listener. Recorded quickly in Brooklyn over a few days, Buzzed is an eruption of ideas and energy.
